Patients who are going to perform cataract operations usually wonder about the stage at which they can reach the improvement and strength of vision after the operation, and whether it is necessary to wear glasses permanently after the operation, but with the technological development witnessed in the field of ophthalmology there are other ways to improve visual strength after cataract operations, which allows the dispense of glasses, where multifocal lenses are one of the most important technological means recently used in the field of lens implantation, to solve vision problems after cataract operations.
Dr. Ahmed Assaf, professor of ophthalmology at Ain Shams University School of Medicine, a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Britain, explained that multifocal lenses are a modern technique that is somewhat similar to the natural lens of the eye created by God.
Dr. Ahmed Assaf, Professor of Ophthalmology at Ain Shams University School of Medicine, added that the lens of the eye created by God can change the focus of light rays every period, while the lenses that are implanted in the cataract process cannot match the same natural lens of the eye, adding that "we are circumventing this by implanting a lens with two or more focal points that enables the patient to see things near and far without resorting to the use of glasses after the operation."
The importance of multifocal lens transplants
Dr. Ahmed Assaf, Professor of Ophthalmology at The Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, pointed out that if a multifocal lens is implanted for the patient of cataract, the patient can then practice his life normally in terms of seeing things near and far facilitating reading books or using mobile without the need for glasses, unlike the other type which is the single-focus lens that enables the patient to see long distances only, making him need glasses for reading.
Dr. Ahmed Assaf, Professor of Ophthalmology at The Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, explained that the multi-focus lens appeared from many generations that had started since the early 1990s, but had problems related to the beginning of their appearance, the patient was seeing halos around lights in the evening, but it witnessed a boom and emerged with new generations of lenses that eliminated all the visual problems associated with the lens in the past.
Do multifocal lenses fit for all situations?
Dr. Ahmed Assaf said that multifocal lenses cannot be performed for all cases, noting that their implantation requires many very harsh conditions, adding that in order to be used for patients there are a range of conditions including:
1- The patient's cornea should be intact and there are no diminites.
2. The patient should not suffer from high astigmatism.
3- The patient should not suffer from high blood pressure.
4- Not to have a diabetic patient with diabetic retinopathy, as the strength of the retina and the optic nerve must be 100%.
5- The patient should not have dry eye.
